Family Therapy

Support for families who want to understand each other better.

Family life can be loving, complicated, messy, tender, exhausting, and occasionally one spilled snack away from total household collapse.

Family therapy offers a supportive space to slow things down, improve communication, and better understand the patterns that may be creating stress or disconnection.

At Waves Psychotherapy, family therapy is collaborative, trauma-informed, and focused on helping family members feel heard, respected, and supported.

Family therapy may help with:

  • Communication challenges

  • Parent-child conflict

  • Sibling conflict

  • Parenting stress

  • Family transitions

  • Separation or divorce-related stress

  • Grief and loss

  • Emotional regulation at home

  • Blended family adjustments

  • Neurodivergence and sensory needs

  • Disability-related family stress

  • Trauma or intergenerational patterns

  • Caregiver burnout

  • Understanding each other’s needs

How family therapy can support your family

Family therapy is not about blaming one person.

It is about looking at how the family system is working, where communication gets stuck, and what each person may need to feel safer, clearer, and more connected.

In sessions, we may work on:

Listening with less defensiveness
Understanding emotional triggers
Practising respectful communication
Building realistic routines and expectations
Supporting nervous system regulation
Strengthening connection
Naming patterns without shame
Creating practical next steps for home

What to expect

Family therapy sessions may include all family members or specific members, depending on the goals and situation.

Before beginning, we will discuss:

  • Who will attend sessions

  • What the main concerns are

  • What each person hopes will change

  • Privacy and confidentiality

  • Consent for family members involved

  • How information will be shared

  • Whether family therapy is the right fit

  • The goal is to create a space where each person can participate as safely and respectfully as possible.

Therapy for real family life

Families do not need to be perfect to begin therapy.

You may come because conversations keep turning into arguments. You may feel stuck in the same patterns. You may be worried about your child. You may be trying to co-parent, reconnect, repair, or better understand each other.

Family therapy can help create room for calmer conversations, clearer expectations, and more compassionate understanding.

No matching sweaters required.

Online and in-person family therapy

Family therapy is available online across Ontario and in person in Ajax.

Online family therapy may be helpful for busy schedules, separated households, accessibility needs, or family members joining from different locations within Ontario.

In-person sessions may be helpful for families who prefer face-to-face support in a private office setting.

Important note

Family therapy is focused on communication, connection, emotional support, and relational well-being.

It is not a custody assessment, parenting capacity assessment, reunification therapy, court report, or legal opinion service.

If your family is involved in legal proceedings, custody disputes, child protection matters, or court-ordered services, please reach out before booking so we can discuss whether this service is appropriate.

Ready to begin?

You do not need to have everything figured out before starting family therapy.

You can begin with what feels tense, stuck, confusing, painful, or ready for change.

Healing the past so it stops living in your present.

Waves operates on the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Huron-Wendat peoples, and the home of the Métis Nation. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We are grateful to live and work on this territory and we honour the resilience and continued presence of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island.
